tedxpsu: breach
What does it mean to breach? Is it compromising a secure network, or perhaps trekking into unknown territory? Generally speaking, to breach is to pass over a boundary between two areas -- to cross a line. For some, breach is a purely physical term, such as when an astronaut shoots through various layers of the atmosphere in order to reach outer space. Others see it as a more symbolic shift between two states of being: life and death, archaic and pragmatic, right and wrong.
Yet there’s a unifying concept that ties the physical meaning to the symbolic one. At its core, to breach is to push through boundaries, even as one’s surroundings exert unfathomable pressures that push the mind and body to their breaking point. We endure these extreme forces in order to reach something extraordinary and beautiful -- or to attain the resources we need to ensure our continued existence.
Breach is about who you become when you pass through to the other side of that line knowing there’s no going back. We wanted to convey that feeling in our logo, with beautiful colors but a spiraling pattern into the unknown, we broke the confinements of the “x” to push those boundaries in our brand we created fresh new content for the TEDxPSU conference. Below you’ll find animatics that our team created to introduce each speaker.
program design
We started by experimenting with many textured patterns to create a world. Pairing what would be unique but still organic and consistent with the brand. We slimmed up the dimensions of the programs from previous years to provide the audience with more manageable booklets during the conference.

wayfinding
We created a custom map to fit into our program. It kept focus with our brand colors and provided aid to those visiting the conference from out of town.
We launched into building out the conference shortly after the identity was developed. We created a unique set design with lighting that resembled our animatic textures. Giving the viewer a welcome into our conference creating a natural visual pull to the speaker and brand on stage. Posters were designed and posted locally around the university and surrounding town. Along with the program we printed custom badges for the attendees to further draw them into the experience.
